People who know the Ragdoll’s character often ask us whether it is a "pet therapy" cat. It is an understandable question: the Ragdoll is known for its calm, its tolerance of contact, that tendency to let itself be picked up which many cats do not have. But to answer seriously we have to take a step back, understand what we are really talking about and, above all, put the cat at the centre.<\/p>\n\n\n

What animal-assisted interventions are<\/h2>\n\n\n

In Italy the correct expression is not "pet therapy" but animal-assisted interventions<\/strong>, abbreviated in Italian to IAA (Interventi Assistiti con gli Animali). The reference is the national guidelines, approved by the Agreement of the State-Regions Conference of 25 March 2015 and subsequently adopted by the Regions and the autonomous Provinces.<\/p>\n\n\n

The guidelines have a precise purpose: to set common minimum standards across the whole country and to protect both the people involved and the animals. They distinguish several types of intervention, with different aims and settings, and provide that every project be run by a multidisciplinary team with professionals trained along defined pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The point that interests us most is exactly this: an assisted intervention is not a cat that "keeps company" spontaneously, but a structured activity, with roles, responsibilities and rules. Among these rules, the animal’s wellbeing holds a central place.<\/p>\n\n\n

Why the cat appears less than the dog<\/h2>\n\n\n

Anyone approaching this world notices straight away that the dog is by far the most widely used animal. It is no accident, and it is not a judgement on the cat’s worth. It depends on the nature of the two animals.<\/p>\n\n\n
