One of the first things that strike you about a Ragdoll is its coat: the pale body, the darker extremities, the blue eyes. But behind this image there is a surprising variety of combinations, with a vocabulary that can be confusing at first. Let us try to put things in order, distinguishing between pattern<\/strong> (the design, that is, how the colour is distributed) and colour<\/strong> (the shade of the darker areas).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The foundation: the "colourpoint" cat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

All Ragdolls share one characteristic: they are pointed cats, or pointed<\/em>. This means that the mask, ears, legs and tail (the "points") are darker than the body. It is the same principle seen in the Siamese, and it is linked to temperature: the cooler areas of the body develop more pigment.<\/p>\n\n\n

This underlying design is always accompanied by blue eyes<\/strong>, one of the breed’s distinctive traits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three main patterns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The GCCF recognises three basic patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Colourpoint.<\/strong> The points are dark and even, with no white. It is the "classic" design: pale body, with mask, ears, legs and tail in the colour of the points.
– Mitted.<\/strong> Like the colourpoint, but with white front paws, as if the cat were wearing gloves (mitts<\/em>), white boots on the hind legs, a white chin and a white stripe running along the belly.
– Bicolour.<\/strong> The white is more extensive: an inverted white "V" on the face, white legs, white chest and belly. The coloured points remain on the ears, the upper part of the mask and the tail, and the back shows colour more or less evenly.<\/p>\n\n\n
